Other additional compensation for which a physician may be eligible, in addition to their base salary, are a Recruitment and Relocation Incentive (maximum of 25% of base pay); Initial or Renewal of Retention Allowance (maximum of 25% of base pay when necessary); Physicians Comparability Allowance, starting at $6,000 for a one year contract and maximum of $60,000 for a two year contract (there is a requirement of meeting new IHS mission specific criteria in certain cases to meet the statutory maximum amounts for the one or two year contract); Market Pay, and an Appointment-Above-The-Minimum.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT - In accordance with the IHS Employee Immunization policy, selectee will be required to be immunized against measles and rubella by providing documentation/proof of immunity to measles and rubella prior to entrance on duty. DUTIES:
Evaluates available resources (e.g., nursing, social services, case management, etc.) in determining the medical care needs of patients.

Serves in a teaching capacity in the development of health care workers and precepts students and residents.

Provides direct care/services to pediatric, geriatric, adolescent and adult patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting.

Conducts diagnostic work and management for general medical, age specific, life span related and level of acuity care.

Counsels patients, families, and groups in treatment, health instructions, and preventative care.

Assesses and treats emergency or urgent cases, such as cardiac arrest, stabilizing trauma, and illnesses.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must possess the Basic Requirement:
A Degree as: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

In addition to the Basic Requirement, applicants must possess the following internship/residency experience:

At least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting (i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training). Include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada.

**An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). **A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or AOA. **A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or other institution accredited in the United States for such training. In addition to the Basic Requirement and internship/residency experience, applicants must possess the following license:

A current, non-temporary, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to the basic requirements, residency experience and license, applicants must possess the following training and specialized experience:

GS-14 : Three (3) years of graduate training or equivalent experience and training; and at least one year of experience, equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service, conducting medical and surgical services such as internal medicine, family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and general surgery in an outpatient, urgent care, and inpatient setting; coordinating a staff in health care delivery; and provides evaluating and consultative services to staff, co-physicians, and patients.

  • PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE (PHS) LICENSURE POLICY: Each PHS physician must possess and maintain a current and unrestricted license in a State.
