DUTIES:

MAJOR DUTIES: This position is located in an outpatient mental health service providing comprehensive Mental Health and Social Service care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Assess/evaluate patient's mental health state through interviews and reviewing health records, providing treatment planning, psychotherapy and continuity of care to patients with acute/chronic mental health issues and social stressors.

Provide crisis and therapeutic interventions in situations which include traumatic and life-threatening outcomes: Suicide, homicide, rape, assault, grief, and abuse/neglect.

Communicate effectively, includes excellent listening and problem-solving skills, before groups of patients or employees of the organization; provide expert testimony in court, to make referrals and to provide follow-ups for continuity of patient care.

Maintain records reporting about patient's symptoms upon intake and hospitalization utilizing word processing software programs.

Facilitates allied mental health care services with other local, Tribal, County, State, Federal, and other community health care groups, to assure continuity of care and availability of resources, as well as to develop new resources for patients.

Licensure as an independent licensed counselor or clinically licensed social worker is highly preferred.

Participate in on-call assignment for after hours' coverage in the emergency department.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. DEGREE: behavioral, or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirement.

OR,

2. Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR,

3. Fours years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC ENTRY QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, APPLICANTS MUST HAVE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND/OR DIRECTLY RELATED EDUCATION IN THE AMOUNTS SHOWN BELOW TO QUALIFY FOR GRADE LEVEL GS-11:

3 years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, that is directly related to the duties of the position;

OR,

1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of Mental Health Specialist.

Graduate Education: Completion of a Graduate level education, in addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements, is qualifying for GS-11, if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Examples: Experience interviewing and assessing patient's psychiatric impairment and providing counseling and establishing a treatment plan; providing crisis and therapeutic interventions in traumatic and life-threatening situations, i.e., suicide, homicide, rape, assaut, grief, abuse/neglect, etc.; provide group or individual therapy sessions; consulting with Psychiatrists and other health professionals on complex mental problems, etc., as indicated under the DUTIES statement.

QUALITY RANKING FACTOR: Applicants who possess licensure as a mental health counselor will rank above those who do not, and those who do not will not be rated ineligible for failure to possess this Quality Ranking Factor. Submit a copy of your current licensure with your online application.
