Primary Job Functions

Evaluates and coordinates activities during surgical procedures by anticipating surgeons’ needs and necessary supplies. “Scrubs in” and assists surgeons with various types of surgical procedures by maintaining current knowledge of various procedures and supplies. Assists physicians with various procedures, treatments, surgical techniques or delegate/assign to other healthcare team members as appropriate. Delegates or assigns aspects of care to healthcare team members consistent with their role and responsibilities.

Adheres to proper surgical procedures of aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments and equipment. Assures that surgical team members adhere to the principles of sterile techniques. Maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles and in! struments. Gathers supplies and instruments and assembles befo! re procedures. Autoclaves instrument trays as required. Assures that specimens are correctly handled and routed to the proper source.

Maintains current knowledge of anatomy/physiology and medications used intraoperatively. Keeps current with developments in the field through participation in seminars, workshops and publications. Responsible for current nursing research, current protocols or procedures, hospital philosophy, and hospital programs in order to maintain quality.

Coordinates patients’ care through collaboration with the patient/family and other specialists of the healthcare team. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.

Effectively communicates with and assists other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines. Assists in orientation of new staff or students and serve as a resource person.

Actively participates in problem-solving and confli! ct resolution to maintain team cohesiveness. Assists in maintaining the quality assessment program developed for the department. Participates in and endorses the established Presbyterian Guest Relations program.

Supports and maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Participates and maintains awareness of ongoing self-management activities and assists with the implementation of the changes as recommended by the committees. Knowledgeable and participates in planning the unit budget and assures quality patient care is delivered in a cost effective manner.

The OR Tech must demonstrate the knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span from neonates to geriatrics. The OR Tech must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the ! neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient groups. Rem! ains sensitive to spiritual and specific cultural needs, recognizes them and incorporates values into plan of care.

Provides instruction and education to patients specific to their needs including but no inclusive to pre-operative, intraoperative and post operative care and discharge instructions. Acts in the role of nurse educator educating patients and families of medication/equipment/treatment/modalities and resources for discharge into community.

Performs other functions as required.
