The Intraoperative RN is responsible to the Director, Surgical Services and Clinical Coordinator or Manager to provide age appropr! iate and culturally sensitive care to infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric perioperative patients. The goal of the perioperative RN is to provide care to achieve a level of wellness equal to or greater than that which the patient had before their operative or other invasive procedure. Competency is evaluated based on the assessment of the nurse's ability to utilize the nursing process to develop individualized plans of care and coordinate and deliver care safely to all patients undergoing operative or other invasive procedures. Care is planned based on the patient's needs assessment data and interventions are evaluated based on measurable goals and activities to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Duties are based on a thorough knowledge of interrelatedness of body systems and the perioperative RN's ability to effectively interact with patients, their designated support person(s), and other healthcare team members, while maintaining the Practice Standards of AN! A, AORN, ASPAN, and/or other relevant Professional Nursing Sta! ndards and Recommended Practices. Abides by and actively supports the company's Christian Philosophy. The perioperative RN implements Surgical Services policies and procedures in accordance with ASPAN standards, AORN's Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices and company policies and procedures relevant for operational objectives. The perioperative RN shares knowledge and skills through mentoring, precepting, role modeling, participation in peer interviews and evaluations, and by providing education and training on all equipment and all procedures for the delivery of pre-operative, intra-operative and post operative care. Maintains quality safe practices in the delivery of care for the peri-operative patient during admission, intra-operative, recovery, and discharge processes within the surgical unit.
Requirements:
Education:
- Graduation from a school of nursing.
- Perioperative nursing! experience in a hospital operating room.
- Evaluated based on assessment of the nurse's ability to utilize the nursing process in the care of peri-operative patients.
- Duties are of considerable difficulty.
- Demonstrates ability to properly place cardiac monitor electrodes.
- Demonstrates ability to properly place 02 saturation measurement probes and interpret results.
- Demonstrates ability to maintain airway.
- Demonstrates ability to assess post-operative pain.
- Demonstrates ability to correctly interpret cardiac rhythms and implement appropriate intervention.
- Verbalizes significance of the following ECO findings: PVC's, PAC's, Atrial fibrillation, Atrial flutter, Qwaves, Elevated or depressed ST segments.
- Verbalizes indication of External Cardiac Pacemaker.
- Demonstrates ability to set-up and apply External Pacemaker.
- Demonstrates correct paddle placement, pressure, energy level and ! sage use of defibrillators.
- Verbalizes significance of the fol! lowing laborator findings: ?K++, ? K++, PT/PTT
- Verbalizes possible adverse perioperative outcomes for patients receiving: Aspirin therapy, Steroids, Coumadin.
- Verbalizes implication of insulin therapy in patients who are NPO.
- Demonstrates ability to provide car that is appropriate for age, culture and disease process: Pediatrics, Adults, Adolescents, Geriatrics.
- Verbalizes when to use standard precautions.
- Verbalizes knowledge of appropriate use of other isolation techniques, i.e.: TB.
- Demonstrates ability to safely operate the following equipment: Suction devices, oxygen, Cardiac Monitor.
- Verbalizes where to find the following items in the crash cart: First line medications, Suction equipment, IV supplies, Intubation equipment.
